Want to be a Merit Badge Counselor

Merit Badge Counselor Qualifications:

  1. Be at least 18 years old.
  2. Be proficient in the merit badge subject by vocation or avocation.
  3. Be able to work with Scout-age boys.
  4. Complete and submit the BSA Merit Badge Counselor Information Form (No. 33405), indicating which Merit badges you wish to counsel.
  5. Complete a BSA Adult Leader Application (see note below)

NOTE: Current registered Adult Leaders will still need to submit a Adult Leader Application with their Merit Badge Counselor Application Form, no additional fees will be incurred.  Non-registered Adults solely wanting to serve as Merit Badge Counselors will need to fill out the Adult Leader Application for a background check and there is no fee.)

As a Merit Badge Counselor, you must agree to:

  1. Follow the requirements of the merit badge, making no deletions or additions, ensuring that the advancement standards are fair and uniform for all Scouts.
  2. Have a Scout and his buddy present at all instructional sessions.
  3. Renew your registration annually if you plan to continue as a Merit Badge Counselor.
